WILDERNESS FIRST RESPONDER

PREREQUISITES: Wilderness First Responder (WFR): Participants are required to hold a 16-hour basic first aid certificate or equivalent.

This is an intensive six-day course designed for outdoor instructors and enthusiasts leading or participating in remote expeditions where evacuation may be protracted and complex. It is growing in reputation as the gold standard in training and conforms to the Wilderness Medical Society’s Wilderness First Responder syllabus, which is widespread in the USA. Much of the training happens in the outdoors.

Training is designed for people going on expedition who have standard expedition first aid equipment with them. We use a team training model to deliver aspects of the course and will also introduce students to some of the kit carried in a rescue team environment. Emphasis is on being self-reliant and dealing competently with both life-threatening and more minor situations. It is for people who may not have access to online medical support from a doctor.

WILDERNESS EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHINCIAN

PREREQUISITES: Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician (WEMT): Participants are required to hold a Wilderness First Responder certificate or equivalent and be a competent provider of medical care. Please feel free to discuss your background and prior experience and we will happily advise on the best course for you.

The Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician (WEMT) course is aimed at practitioners who are responsible for providing medical and trauma pre-hospital care in remote or austere environments.

Training focuses on patient assessment, treatment principles and management of incidents rather than the traditional protocols associated with First Aid. A thorough understanding of principles enables the provision of care to be adapted to each individual situation and environment.

Practitioners are engaged and encouraged to make differential diagnoses and then provide management that is both practical and advanced. This is completed with consultation from doctors and trauma specialists in preparation for short and extended evacuations.

WILDERNESS PHYSICIAN

PREREQUISITES: Wilderness Physician (WP): Participants are required to be physicians, and supply their registration number.

The Wilderness Physician course runs in parallel with the WEMT course.  There are some wilderness-specific sessions that the WP students take part in with their colleagues.  They also do some separate sessions focused on working in austere environments and brushing up on basic first aid and patient handling.  They get to experience remote medical support / oversight and to work on communication skills.

The Wilderness Physicians get to take part in practical sessions throughout the week and work in teams with their WEMT colleagues on immersive and challenging scenarios each night.  The Wilderness Physician student will learn how to apply their every-day medical knowledge to rescue situations and austere settings, and how to not rely on having the kitchen sink to hand!

WEMT REFRESHER

If you’ve completed one of our WEMT courses in the last 5 years, then our three day refresher is for you. We’ll refresh, update and build on the skills and knowledge you learnt on the WEMT course. The course is a mixture of classroom and outdoor work, using a mixture of tutorial and scenario teaching. Where possible teaching is delivered outside. We’ll draw on the experiences the group have gathered since you completed your WEMT, and help further develop your skills.

This course is available either on a residential or non-residential basis. If you choose the non-residential option then meals during the course are still included. The residential option is full board.

Completing the refresher will revalidate your WEMT course for a further three years.
